Wout Weghorst joins Hoffenheim on a loan from Burnley for one season.

Wout Weghorst has joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on a season-long loan. The 31-year-old Dutch international had loan spells at Besiktas and Manchester United last season, scoring two goals in 31 appearances for the latter club.

Weghorst joined Burnley from Wolfsburg in January 2022 for £12m, but he was unable to help the club avoid relegation from the Premier League. He scored twice in 20 appearances for the Clarets, but he was often criticized for his lack of mobility and his inability to hold the ball up.

Hoffenheim are hoping that Weghorst can provide them with a more physical presence up front. The club finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season, and they are looking to improve their goalscoring record in 2023-24.

Weghorst is the second major signing that Hoffenheim have made this summer, following the arrival of Austrian midfielder Florian Grillitsch from Ajax. The club are also close to signing Hungarian defender Attila Szalai from Fenerbahce.

Weghorst is said to be excited about the opportunity to play for Hoffenheim. He said, “I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Bundesliga again. Hoffenheim are a big club with ambitious plans, and I’m confident that I can help them achieve their goals.”

Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen said, “We’re delighted to have signed Wout Weghorst. He’s a proven goal scorer who will add a lot of quality to our attack. We’re confident that he can be a key player for us this season.”

Weghorst will be available for selection for Hoffenheim’s first Bundesliga game of the season against Hertha Berlin on August 15.
